Game
Same spire, same climb, same agonising choice about which card to take. Three acts, a deck you build as you go, and a boss at the top who will remind you exactly which mistake you made forty minutes ago.
The Ironclad and the Silent are back, and the Regent is new. It looks simple and it sets up simple. That was always the trick. All the depth is in the cards.
If the grind of the first one put you off, nothing here will change your mind. It still wants you to lose and start over. But it is a very, very good version of that.
Co-op
The first game had no co-op at all. That is the headline. You each run your own deck and take your own turns, but you fight the same battles and can see what the other one is holding.
What it turns into is a coaching session, whether you asked for one or not. One of us has hundreds of hours in the original and the other had never touched it, and half the run was a running commentary about why the whirlwind should have come after the inflame. You can heal each other. Boss fights get genuinely tense when you are both one bad draw from dying.
It is not a reinvention of co-op. But for a series that had none, it is a lot.
