Game

Take Raft, stir in The Forest, then hand everybody guns. You wash up on an archipelago with nothing, and slowly turn a miserable stretch of beach into something resembling a home. Chop wood, hunt for hide, craft string, build a workbench, put up a window that comes out slightly crooked and blame the developers for it.

The twist is the expeditions. You can sail off to other islands for better resources, but those islands are shared with other players, and everything you carry is gone if you die out there. It takes a comfortable survival loop and makes it genuinely tense.

It is early access and it shows. It crashed on us, it was laggy, and the quest design has a habit of not mentioning the one thing you needed to pick up before you left. But under the rough edges there is a game here with real promise, and the price makes it very easy to forgive.

Co-op

The camp is the heart of it. You share the base, the resources and the workbench, and it comes alive when you split the labour. One of you stays home building walls of questionable quality while the other is out in a cave getting mauled by hyenas for a bit of raw hide. Up to five of you can share an island.

The expeditions are where it gets properly interesting. You invite the whole camp, sail out together and try to bring the loot home before somebody else takes it off your corpse. Reviving a downed friend costs an actual revival kit, so being careless out there gets expensive fast. If you want a purely cosy survival game the PvP will annoy you. For us it added exactly the kind of tension that keeps everybody talking over each other.

Most of the bugs hit the session start. Get through the first half hour and it holds together fine.
